About the Item

Because of the date and events at that time, offered here is an important and authentic Russian hand painted lacquer box for collectors.  The box is replete with a plethora of provenance and documentation placing the box as having been made likely on June 2nd, 1980 to showcase the high quality folk art that Soviet artisans and craftsmanship produced in preparation for presentation and distribution at the 1980 world Summer Olympics, which were held in Moscow, and subsequently boycotted by 60 nations (including the United States), because of the Soviet Union's invasion and occupation of Afghanistan in December of 1979. This period, 1978 thru 1984, was recognized as the "Golden Age" of Russian lacquer boxes and highly sought after by connoisseurs, as the demand for Russian boxes diminished after this period, resulting eventually, in low quality mass produced non signed souvenir trinket boxes. This is a Soviet era Russian black lacquer hand painted jewelry box, most definitely of papier mache (preferable to wood); and having been made circa 1980 in the village of Kholuy by the "Kholuy Artistic Lacquer Factory" as evidenced by the maker's certificate in the interior; also stipulated is "1st Quality Grade", the highest designated grade at that time. The artist's signature "Kharichev V.' along with "painted by " (translation) appears in the lower right hand corner of the  lid (see image). The lower middle bottom provides the village of "Kholuy" as the production location (over 400 miles from Moscow). The artist's signature, along with the village, verifies that the box was hand painted by a recognized and well respected artist, versus unsigned less important boxes. The lower left script identifies the subject matter of the "in full color" and hand painted surface, as the iconic Russian fairy tale "The Little Humpbacked Horse" written in 1834 by Pyotr Yershov; telling the story of a farm boy who becomes best friends with a mystical humpback horse who has magical powers and their adventures together. The themes were later memorialized in Russian ballet and opera. This fine quality of this box is demonstrated by the tight fit of the lid to the base, the excellent hand painted characters to the lid, and the gold leaf filigree design pattern to the entire border along with the gold leaf provenance signatures on the lid bottom. The intricate gold leaf detailing is a hallmark of premium Russian lacquer work; note the fine borders and ornamental gold work within the painting—such as the highlights on the horse's harness and the border pattern—these are key indicators of a more valuable, "master-level" work rather than a standard souvenir. The box is in excellent and completely original condition and there is no touch paint, or restoration of any kind; no cracks splits or warping; a very fitting item for the discerning collector.
