About the Item

Antique New England cherry pipe box. This fabulous antique hanging pipe box was made in the Hudson River Valley around the turn of the 18th century. The piece is made of cherry and comes complete with its original dovetailed drawer at the base. Pipe boxes were commonly found in colonial taverns and inns and were made to accommodate the long, thin clay pipes which were used at that time. The boxes often had drawers in the bottom for storing tobacco and flint used to light the pipes themselves. These clay pipes were communal, and enabled a traveler who wished to smoke to pay the barkeep/innkeeper before removing a pipe from the wall box. When finished, the customer would return the pipe to the box for the next patron, who would in turn take it and break off the end of the clay stem in order to reuse it. Pipe boxes were made in many forms, and could be rudimentary or more decorative dependent on the setting. This piece features more elaborate decorative elements of construction and likely would have been used in a fine establishment. The pipe box has been made with a round hole at the top intended to affix the piece to the wall and is finished with cut-out scrolls located at each of the four corners. The backboard and upper walls of the box have scalloped edges which add an elegant touch to the appearance of the piece. The small drawer at the base has dovetail construction along with a molded face featuring a simple brass knob at the center. The pipe box is in good condition with no major structural issues or damage. As an antique piece, the box shows appropriate signs of age and use including some minor cracks and general wear consisting of scars and nicks to the wood surface. The 2lb 9oz piece is 18.5" at its tallest point while the front panel is 12.5" tall. The box portion is 5.75" wide and 4" deep. This fine pipe box displays beautifully and would be a wonderful addition to a collection of early American antiques, or works equally well as a Stand alone decorative accent. It can be displayed empty or filled with clay pipes, whether originals or reproductions.
