About the Item

An elegant pair of George III mahogany knife boxes from the late 18th Century showcases exceptional Georgian craftsmanship, featuring a beautifully sloped lid and a classic serpentine front. Their premium figured mahogany wood displays a rich, deep grain pattern, further accented by delicate, contrasting string inlay borders along the edges. The left container retains its original skeleton key, embellished with a large, ornate woven gold fabric tassel hanging from the keyhole. When opened, the hinged lids reveal beautifully finished, clean mahogany undersides and secure brass latch mechanisms that match the interior hardware. Most significantly, both boxes retain their rare, intact tiered wooden cutlery matrices, containing custom-cut, star-burst pattern slots and crescent shapes meticulously arranged to store an extensive set of fine silver knives, forks, and spoons upright. The intricately pierced, multi-tiered platforms feature detailed circular, dumbbell, and curved cutout slots finished with deep, dark-stained edges that beautifully contrast against the warmer tones of the primary mahogany frame. Designed as prestigious status symbols for an upscale Georgian dining room, these matching storage boxes boast a distinctive undulating, columnar facade that captures the timeless balance of Neoclassical geometry and sophisticated practical utility.
