About the Item

An early Victorian writing slope box, crafted from coromandel, a rare and highly prized exotic hardwood, and decorated with brass inlay and inset carrying handles. The box includes a concealed side drawer, which can only be opened once the lid is raised and an internal retaining pin is released. This discreet locking arrangement adds an additional level of security to the fitted interior. Inside, the writing surface is lined in black leather with gilt-tooled decoration. The interior is fitted with inkwells, a pen tray and small lidded compartments, together with a shield-shaped escutcheon. The upper section of the leather writing slope lifts to reveal a storage compartment beneath. Within the fitted writing section is a further concealed mechanism: when one of the internal dividers is withdrawn, a sprung compartment is released, revealing three hidden drawers. The lower section of the writing slope also opens to provide an additional storage compartment. A particularly well-fitted example, combining practical writing facilities with multiple concealed compartments and hidden drawers.

Mid-19th Century French Louis XVI Style Parquetry & Ormolu Cylinder Desk c1869

Located in King's Lynn, GB

A superb mid-19th century French Louis XVI style cylinder desk, made circa 1869, veneered in kingwood, rosewood, tulipwood and bois satiné, with elaborate parquetry and finely cast ormolu mounts. The desk is surmounted by a white Carrara marble top enclosed by a brass gallery. The cylinder front opens to reveal a fitted interior with four drawers, each incorporating fitted divisions, together with open storage space above. The principal writing surface is inset with orange leather, finely tooled with gilt borders. This surface can be slid forward to provide additional writing space and pushed back when not in use. To either side are extendable writing slides, each similarly inset with matching orange leather and gilt-tooled borders, providing further writing surfaces when required. The main writing surface and both side slides are framed with bois satiné and rosewood crossbanding. The desk is richly decorated throughout with elaborate bois satiné parquetry intersected with tulipwood, creating the refined geometric decoration associated with high-quality French cabinetmaking of the period. It stands on tapering fluted legs enriched with brass and ormolu decoration in the Louis XVI manner. Significance & Rarity Fine 19th century French cylinder desks...

19th Century Victorian Writing Slope/ Travel Desk Box, Brass Bound, UK ca. 1815

19th Century Victorian Writing Slope/ Travel Desk Box, Brass Bound, UK ca. 1815

Located in Lichtenberg, AT

Impressive Victorian writing slope or travel desk - attributed to the famous company of Thompson - from the period around 1800 - 1815 in the United Kingdom. This fantastic Captain’s campaign writing slope dates back to the Napoleonic wars. Well constructed out of solid mahogany with screwed down mount re-enforcements, brass banding, and inset carrying handles at each end, this outstanding travel desk box was designed to withstand the harsh maritime life at sea. The exterior of this Victorian travel box shows an attractive mahogany grain, beautiful colour, and a lovely pleasing patina. There are a couple of old indented scars to the lid along with the usual minor surface scratching, but these imperfections confer it an absolutely unique charme. The box has a tri-fold operation, opening to reveal a secondary smaller writing surface for quick use, then opening again to reveal the main slope fitted with a green felt writing surface which is in reasonable condition and compliments the original interior. When it is completely opened you have two storage compartments underneath. The original lock works smoothly with the original key. The original interior is nicely fitted out with a dark green leather drop-down section in the lid which features four memoire pockets. This section can additionally be lowered to reveal a document wallet...
