A striking Italian Modern red and clear Lucite decorative box designed by Alessandro Albrizzi, circa 1970. #5737 The box features a vivid translucent red Lucite body surmounted by an exceptionally substantial clear Lucite lid. The thick, beautifully polished cover is beveled and sculpted around its perimeter, creating dramatic optical reflections and refractions when viewed from different angles. The brilliant red body reflects through the transparent lid, producing the jewel-like appearance characteristic of the finest Lucite accessories of the period. The restrained rectangular geometry and saturated color give the piece a distinctly 1970s Italian Modern and Space Age aesthetic. It works equally well as a jewelry box, keepsake box, desk accessory or purely sculptural decorative object. Albrizzi's Lucite accessories have become increasingly collectible, particularly his boxes and geometric objects from the 1970s. Comparable documented examples include colored Lucite boxes, clear-and-colored combinations and cube-form containers produced in Italy during the period. The substantial thickness of the clear Lucite lid is particularly attractive on this example, giving what is a relatively small object considerable visual presence. Condition: Good vintage condition with light surface scratches, scuffs and signs of use consistent with age, particularly visible in the clear Lucite. Please refer to photographs for condition. He became particularly known for imaginative furnishings and decorative objects employing Lucite and acrylic, materials whose transparency allowed him to experiment with color, reflection and geometric form. His vintage Lucite boxes, furniture and decorative objects are now represented in the secondary design market and are particularly associated with Italian Modern, Mid-Century Modern and 1970s Space Age design. 1stDibs currently catalogs numerous authenticated Albrizzi Lucite boxes from the period.
