About the Item

An expressive hand-built stoneware tea bowl, conceived with an irregular, organic rim and a deeply textured surface. The pinched conical form carries a distinctively mottled exterior and interior, combining dark espresso brown and charcoal tones over a pale buff body. This striking dappled surface references classic Chinese Song-dynasty Jizhou tortoiseshell glazes, reinterpreted here within the British studio pottery movement. Deeply carved and textured impressions run across the exterior wall, creating a tactile contrast against the undulating rim. The interior is similarly treated, with the dark mottled patterning swirling down into the narrow, unglazed base. Light catches the varied depth of the dark pigment against the pale background, giving the vessel a bark-like, earthy character. The underside of the foot reveals an incised studio monogram alongside impressed maker markings. While the individual potter remains unidentified, the robust potting and confident handling of the glaze reflect high-calibre post-war craft, likely dating from the 1970s or 1980s. The piece measures approximately 8 cm in diameter across the rim by 5 cm in height, making it well proportioned as a chawan tea bowl, a miniature vase, or a tactile cabinet piece. All surfaces remain crisp and well preserved. Condition is exceptional, with no chips, hairline cracks, surface flakes, or post-firing restoration. We ship internationally, tracked.
