About the Item

A striking Chinese gilt and black lacquer calligraphy panel dating to the 19th century, during the Qing dynasty. Exceptionally tall and narrow in proportion, the panel features a continuous vertical inscription rendered in bold black characters against a richly aged gold ground. The calligraphy is recessed or carved into the prepared surface, creating subtle relief and giving the inscription additional visual depth. The gilded surface has developed extensive craquelure, rubbing, small losses and darker areas from age and use, producing the wonderfully layered patina visible throughout. A narrow incised border frames the inscription while allowing the calligraphy to remain the principal decorative element. The reverse has been left comparatively plain, retaining an old reddish-brown surface and evidence of its original construction and age. Panels of this type were generally architectural or ceremonial in function and could have been displayed in an ancestral hall, residence or other formal interior. The wording appears honorific in character, with references associated with virtue and commendation. At over eight and a half feet tall yet only ten inches wide, it makes an unusually dramatic vertical accent and would work particularly well between windows, alongside a doorway, or as part of a collection of Asian art and architectural fragments. The height includes the hanging fitting in its normal resting position, not with the upper handle raised.
