Color chipboard relief on wove paper by Seong Moy (Chinese/American, b. 1921) titled, "Changes," artist proof number 4 of 13, circa 1960s. Moy was an early experimenter with the use of color in the relief print and his compositions revealed an interest in the spatial relationships between shapes and forms. This work is a definitive example of that interest with its elements energized through the use of color. The design is wonderfully modern and reminds us a bit of flag semaphore. Unframed. Titled, numbered and signed in pencil at lower border.
A painter, graphic artist and teacher, Seong Moy was born in Canton, China in 1921 and emigrated to the US in 1931. From 1941 to 1942, he studied with both Vaclav Vytlacil and Hans Hofmann and his teaching career includes stints at Pratt, Columbia, Cooper Union and Vassar, as well as at the Seong Moy School of Painting and Graphic Arts in Provincetown, MA which he opened in 1954.
