This large contemporary clear acrylic sculpture of a piano was inspired by the artist’s love of music. This beautiful and magical piece of modern art is the unique vision of an award-winning author and music lover. Years ago, Ruth Kassinger noticed how sunlight streaming through her living room windows bounced off white walls, through a glass coffee table, and splashed rainbows around the room. When her eyes drifted to the black baby grand piano in the room, she had an epiphany. The idea for a full-scale, transparent piano sculpture filled with colors was born. To create the piano, she worked with a talented team of acrylic glass artisans who created the piano’s body and its keyboard. Using laser technology, thousands of holes were drilled both by computer and by hand to ensure that all of the threads are perfectly parallel. Then, using small acrylic boxes as models, Kassinger spent a year testing various threads to determine spacing and color combinations until they expressed her vision of music. “It takes me months to thread a piano. I use embroidery needles that I manipulate with long-handled surgical forceps. The highly polished, clear acrylic form allows light to flow through the sculpture, illuminating the thousands of multi-hued nylon and French silk threads. The threads change color as you move around the piano and, thanks to an optical phenomenon called moiré, they appear to move as if being played.” Kassinger is best known for her books about science, history, and gardening. As a science writer, she has studied and written about the concepts of transparency and color. As a music lover, Kassinger’s personal experience of listening to music is heightened by a form of synaesthesia where she actually sees colors when she hears music. And, having grown up in a family of craftsmen (her parents had a custom furniture business and she later designed several pieces for her own home), she has the skills to undertake her first sculptural piece: a ‘glass’ piano...

This exceptional artwork is currently on display and available for sale at Signet Contemporary Art Gallery and online. “Coco Popsicle Sculpture (White)” by Sanuj Birla is a playful exploration of luxury, consumer culture, and contemporary Pop Art. Crafted from fibre and resin, the tabletop sculpture takes the form of a pristine white melting popsicle, incorporating the recognisable No. 5 Chanel label on one side and the interlocking CC logo on the other. On closer inspection, the familiar frozen treat reveals itself as a witty reinterpretation of a perfume bottle, complete with a broken corner that suggests a playful bite has been taken from its surface. Birla’s contemporary Pop Art approach transforms familiar imagery from fashion and everyday life into an unexpected sculptural object. The clean geometry associated with a perfume bottle is softened by the rounded form and melting appearance of the popsicle, creating an intriguing tension between elegance and humour. This combination of recognisable references allows the sculpture to feel immediately familiar while remaining surprising in its presentation. The sculpture’s silhouette plays an important role in its visual character. The elongated popsicle form establishes a strong vertical structure, while the melting edges and broken corner disrupt its otherwise polished appearance. Logos positioned across the surface become integral compositional elements, encouraging the viewer to move around the sculpture and discover how the object shifts between confectionery, perfume bottle, and Pop Art statement. Colour is central to the sculpture’s visual impact. The predominantly white palette gives the work a crisp, minimalist appearance, reinforcing its association with luxury packaging while also recalling the smooth surface of a frozen confection. The restrained colour scheme allows the graphic elements and sculptural form to remain prominent, giving the piece a clean and distinctly contemporary presence. The sculpture’s carefully finished surface also encourages close attention to material and texture. Smooth areas of fibre and resin contrast with the irregular details of the melting form and broken edge, creating a playful tension between perfection and imperfection. These details reinforce the illusion of an object caught between states, as though a polished luxury product has unexpectedly begun to melt away. Yet “Coco Popsicle Sculpture (White)” is more than a whimsical combination of a popsicle and perfume bottle. By bringing together imagery associated with luxury fashion and an ordinary sweet treat, Birla playfully blurs distinctions between exclusivity and everyday consumption. The sculpture invites viewers to reconsider familiar symbols of desire and branding through humour, transformation, and visual contradiction. With its crisp white palette, inventive form, and playful fusion of luxury imagery and popular culture, “Coco Popsicle Sculpture (White)” is a distinctive contemporary tabletop sculpture...
