John William Godward Art

British, 1861-1922

John William Godward is considered among the top British Neoclassical artists of his time. His career was devoted to a segment of Classicism known as the Marble School, with Greco-Roman subjects placed within elaborate settings that often centered upon marble architectural elements. His elegantly adorned beauties are depicted with a degree of technical mastery that remains unsurpassed. Godward's work is most celebrated for its implicit sensuality and masterful, naturalistic detail. Raised in Wimbledon, England, Godward debuted at London’s Royal Academy exhibition in 1887. By the subsequent decade, the burgeoning artist was on a steady ascent to artistic success. Having fallen under the influence of British Neoclassical Revivalists Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, Lord Frederic Leighton and Sir Edward John Poynter, Godward quickly adopted their style. The sensuality and mystery of Godward’s female subjects, combined with his impressive Greco-Roman settings, attracted fans across Europe and sent Godward on a rapid ascent to artistic stardom. In 1889, he was elected to the Royal Society of British Artists. Ten years later, Godward debuted at the Parisian Salon of 1899, where he was heaped with praise. In the early years of the 20th century, however, Godward was faced with the painful reality that the classical world he so loved was being overshadowed by modern art movements. He moved to Rome in 1912 to surround himself with the physical remnants of the classical world, and there he stayed for most of his remaining career.

Located in New Orleans, LA

John William Godward 1861-1922 British A Pompeian Lady Signed and dated "J.W. Godward 1904" (lower right, partially covered by frame) Oil on canvas One of the last and greatest Victorian neoclassical painters, John William Godward is celebrated for his flawlessly executed images of graceful women posed in idealized ancient settings. In this work, entitled A Pompeian Lady, a classical beauty is caught idling in a moment of quiet, solitary reflection. Godward's elegant subjects are depicted with a degree of technical mastery that remains unsurpassed, and the work's dramatic palette, luxurious fabrics and classical vision are all characteristics of his unique take on the neoclassical style. Godward was unmatched in terms of his technical skill and attention to detail. A master of contrasting textures, he paints a diaphanous gown draping against the model’s smooth, milky white skin, which sits against the painstakingly rendered individual hairs of a tiger’s pel. Scintillating color permeates the canvas as well, energizing the otherwise static scene. Each element is given careful attention, and the overall effect is one of both immaculate technique and sensual tactility. Along with his contemporary and mentor, Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, Godward set the tone for the Victorian neoclassicist movement. He built his career upon creating images of idealized feminine beauty infused with a Greco-Roman-inspired style. Though greatly influenced by Alma-Tadema, Godward distinguished himself through his predilection for the solitary female figure. His fame rose dramatically in the first few years of the 20th century, when the present work was completed, due to the burgeoning strength of the British Empire and the Victorian society’s preoccupation with ancient Rome. To many of the newly affluent, Roman society was, as Iain Gale writes, “a flawless mirror of their own immaculate world.” The sensuality and mystery of Godward’s maidens, combined with his impressive antique backdrops...

CHRISTOFFEL LUBIENIECKI (1659-1729) Pair of portraits of a gentleman and a lady, both in silk kimono, before a country house (circa 1680) Indistinctly signed “C.......” on a box under the man’s left hand Oil on canvas, 79.5 x 67 cm each Both sitters are portrayed wearing a silk “Japanese” coat. During the second half of the seventeenth the Japanese silk coat, an adapted Japanese kimono, became a real vogue in the Dutch elite. The exclusive Dutch trade contacts with Japan can explain the popularity of the kimono-style silk coats in the Netherlands. Everybody who could afford one, dressed in such a fashionable and comfortable coat and, like the present sitters, some proud owners had themselves portrayed in a “Japanese” coat often together with an oriental carpet to underline their standing and international connections. These portraits are the work of the Polish-born portraitist Christoffel Lubieniecki (also known as Lubienitski, Lubinitski or Lubiniecki) Lubieniecki was first trained in Hamburg under Julian Stuhr and after 1675 in Amsterdam under Adriaen Backer and Gerard de Lairesse. He specialized in landscapes, generally of an Italianate character, and in portraits. The loving execution of these contented burghers, enjoying the garden vistas of their country house, places him alongside Amsterdam portraitists such as Constantijn Netscher and Michiel van Musscher...

Paul Louis Narcisse GROLLERON (Seignelay 1848 – Paris 1901) Child atop a wall Oil on canvas H. 60 cm ; W. 73 cm Signed and dated lower right – 1884 Paul Grolleron belongs to the generation of French painters who, during the second half of the 19th century, revitalized military painting through a keen and sensitive observation of soldiers' lives. Born in 1848 in Seignelay (Yonne), he trained in Paris under Léon Bonnat, receiving instruction grounded in rigorous draftsmanship and powerful structural composition. Exhibiting at the Salon from 1873 onwards, Grolleron developed a body of work dedicated to military painting, history painting, and genre scenes. He drew his primary inspiration from 19th-century conflicts, particularly the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–1871. Far from portraying war in an exclusively heroic light, the artist focused on lived experiences: marches, halts, bivouacs, reconnaissance missions, and combat scenes. The precision with which he rendered uniforms, equipment, and postures lends his compositions both a narrative and a documentary quality. His art is distinguished by solid draftsmanship, accuracy of detail, and remarkable compositional mastery. Notable works exhibited at the Salon include *Épisode de 1870* (Episode of 1870), *Combat en 1870 sous les murs de Paris* (Combat in 1870 beneath the walls of Paris), *Sur le qui-vive, à Buzenval* (On the Alert at Buzenval), and *Épisode de la bataille de Loigny* (Episode from the Battle of Loigny). An award-winning Salon artist whose work is held in both public and private collections, Grolleron remains a significant figure in French military painting...

The Dissidents: Discourse on the Golden Mean
The Dissidents: Discourse on the Golden Mean

The Dissidents: Discourse on the Golden Mean

By Michael Tole

Located in New Orleans, LA

Michael Tole says of his work… This work draws a connection between the didactic moralizing tendencies of Neo Classicism (represented in the style of the painting) and Modernism (represented in the architectural setting). Though modern art eschews the naturalistic imagery used by Neo Classicists, both movements pursued a self-important, austere, self-consciously masculine aesthetic that they saw as synonymous with virtue. Set in the MoMA courtyard, a passel of men lounge about, regarding a golden statue which looks terribly out of place in this modernist vitrine. The uncomfortable architectural setting, prisonlike and cold, provides a foil for the odalisque-like young men sprawled on hard stone benches and paying homage to the central idol. In my current work, The Revisionist Histories, I am writing letters to art history, literature, and mythology in an attempt to reflect the social changes that have reshaped our society over the past century.  As part of this agenda, I explore the evolution of gender norms, power dynamics, and representation within Western visual culture and what this implies for the negotiation between pleasure, justice, and our culturally specific discourse on beauty.    The seed for The Revisionist Histories was sewn when I caught a glimpse of my preteen daughters watching music videos on their iPad as I chopped veggies for dinner.  Out of the corner of my eye I caught glimpses of music videos featuring Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Katy Perry, and Doja Cat gyrating across the tiny screen.  A better parent might have snatched the iPad away, but I was overcome with hallucinatory visions of this pop diva...

Signed "A Dovianne" in the lower left corner. A vibrant and highly detailed historical scene depicting a ceremonial procession of mounted figures crossing a grand city square in Geneva, richly adorned with festive banners and flags. The composition is animated by a rhythmic procession of elegantly dressed horsemen, accompanied by soldiers and attendants, creating a dynamic sense of movement and civic pageantry. At the center of the scene, a monumental statue anchors the composition, reinforcing the public and historical significance of the event. The surrounding architecture, carefully rendered, is decorated with numerous flags suggesting a moment of national celebration or official ceremony within the city. The artist demonstrates strong academic training in the rendering of figures, horses, and perspective. The palette is lively yet balanced, combining warm earth tones with vibrant reds, blues, and gold accents, while the softly illuminated sky provides atmospheric contrast. John William Godward 1861-1922 British At the Window Signed and dated "J.W. Godward. 1920" (lower right) Signed, inscribed and dated "At The Window/J.W.Godward. Rome.1920” (en verso) Oil on canvas A breathtaking quintessential work by John William Godward, this intriguing composition captures a classical beauty in a moment of quiet reflection as she gazes from a marble windowsill. Celebrated as one of the most important Neoclassical painters at the turn of the century, Godward's career was devoted to a segment of Classicism known as the Marble School which championed rendering Greco-Roman subjects placed amongst period architectural settings. Though he worked throughout the late 19th century into the 1920s, Godward’s elegant and ethereal compositions provided an escape from the present day and beckoned viewers to lose themselves in a bygone era of classical serenity. Godward rendered his idyllic scenes with a degree of sensuality and technical mastery that remains unsurpassed. The present work, entitled At the Window, perfectly embodies Godward’s oeuvre. The beautiful subject leans out from a marble aperture with a contemplative gaze. Her elegant peach-colored Grecian gown is punctuated by a deep magenta sash draping down from her waist, accentuating her graceful and sensuous form. Godward renders his idyllic subject and setting with keen detail, carefully painting the veins of various types of marble and his subject’s toe peeking out from beneath the hem of her gown. Of Godward's compelling oeuvre, esteemed art historian Vern Grosvenor Swanson wrote, “He sought to portray peace, feminine charm and ideal perfection by marvelously painted and composed classical pictures of beautiful women in halcyon marble environments.” Raised in Wimbledon, England, Godward debuted at London’s Royal Academy exhibition in 1887. By the subsequent decade, the burgeoning artist was on a steady ascent to artistic success. Having fallen under the influence of British Neoclassical Revivalists Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, Lord Frederic Leighton, and Sir Edward John Poynter...

John William Godward 1861-1922 British Cytheris Signed and dated "J.W. Godward / 1922" (upper left) Oil on canvas A classical beauty is captured in a moment of idle reflection in this stunning oil on canvas by John William Godward. Celebrated as one of the most important classical painters at the turn of the century, Godward's career was devoted to a segment of Classicism known as the Marble School, with Greco-Roman subjects placed within architectural settings. His elegant subjects are depicted with a degree of sensuality and technical mastery that remains unsurpassed. The present work, entitled Cytheris, embodies Godward’s lifelong preoccupation with depicting beautiful young women in classically-inspired dress. Cytheris is a nickname associated with Aphrodite, the goddess of love, who was said to have been born of the waves off the coast of the Greek island Cytherea. The title points to the sitter's beauty, but also, as Godward scholar Vern Swanson suggests, perhaps indicates she is a priestess of the cult of Aphrodite, while her soft blue head covering and downward gaze convey a virginal quality. Beautifully rendered with Godward's signature technical perfection, the piece embodies the sensual, graceful languor that permeates his greatest works. Raised in Wimbledon, England, Godward debuted at London’s Royal Academy exhibition in 1887. By the subsequent decade, the burgeoning artist was on a steady ascent to artistic success. Having fallen under the influence of British Neoclassical Revivalists Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, Lord Frederic Leighton, and Sir Edward John Poynter, Godward quickly adopted, if not rivaled, their style. He envisioned similar scenes of the ancient world, seamlessly blending antiquity and beauty in breathtaking compositions. Cynthia

By John William Godward

Located in New Orleans, LA

John William Godward is considered among the most important and influential Neoclassical artists of all time. This extraordinary, recently discovered oil on canvas, entitled Cynthia, showcases the remarkable skill of this great master at the very height of his career. Beautifully rendered with Godward's signature technical perfection, the piece embodies the sensual, graceful languor that permeates his greatest works. Godward's career was devoted to these portrayals of women within classical settings — usually dark-haired beauties draped in diaphanous fabrics. However, this work is a rarity within his oeuvre with its dramatically dark, draped background used in lieu of the artist's typical marble columns or views of the Ionian coast. Within this perfectly composed world, Godward heightens the inherent sensuality of his subject through a masterful use of contrast. The vivid, jewel-like tones of her flowing tunic seem especially rich as they fall over her smooth, tanned skin, and these colors are echoed in the rich red ribbons in her elaborately braided hair, which appears soft to the touch thanks to Godward's minute rendering of each individual hair. It is these subtle, yet alluring details that demonstrate Godward's genius as an artist. Raised in Wimbledon, Godward debuted at London’s Royal Academy exhibition in 1887. By the subsequent decade, the burgeoning artist was on a steady ascent to artistic success. Having fallen under the influence of British Neoclassical Revivalists Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, Lord Frederic Leighton and Sir Edward John Poynter, Godward quickly adopted, if not rivaled, their style.
