Jean-Michel Folon Art

Belgian, b. 1934
Jean-Michel Folon (1934 – 2005), better known as “Folon,” was a Belgian painter, illustrator, and sculptor who produced images featured in various publications throughout the world. He is renowned for his branded watercolor illustrations of often whimsical birds, winged people, and other peculiar characters painted in a surrealistic style. Early in his career Folon published his drawings in newspapers mostly in the USA, where he was recognized earlier than in Europe, and illustrated books by Franz Kafka and Ray Bradbury, amongst others. He created numerous works in many different media for well known individuals and cultural institutions worldwide, including in theatre, opera, subways, film and television, sculptures, tapestries, church windows and even a flag.

Jean-Michel Folon (1 March 1934 – 20 October 2005) was a Belgian artist, illustrator, painter, and sculptor The first exhibition of his watercolors was in New York in 1969 in the Lefebre Gallery. One year later he exhibited in Tokyo and in the Il Milione gallery in Milan. He also participated in the XXVth Venice Biennale. In 1973 he joined the selection of Belgian artists in the XXVth São Paulo Biennale, where he was granted the Grand Prize in Painting. Over the years his work concentrated on different techniques, including watercolor, etching, silkscreen, illustrations, mosaics, and stained glass, which showed the diversity of his art. His work Ein Baum stirbt - Un albero muore, 1974, is by Museo Cantonale d’Arte [de] of Lugano. He also designed numerous posters, often for humanitarian causes. Around 1988 he created his first sculptures made out of wood. He then moved on to creating sculptures in clay, plaster, bronze and marble, while continuing to paint. Several museums dedicated exhibitions to him, among them the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris in 1971, the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam in 1976, the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London in 1977, the Musée Picasso in Antibes...

Jean Michel Folon "L' Arbre" Serigraph for Gallerie Marquet, Paris, 1975

By Jean-Michel Folon

Located in San Carlos, CA

Gorgeous 1975 serigraph after Jean Michel Folon's beautiful "l'arbre" or "forest". Produced in 1975 by Editions Marquet for Gallery Marquet in Paris, France. This print is in excellent condition, see pictures for details. It comes unframed. Jean-Michel Folon’s (Belgium 1934 - 2005) enigmatic landscapes and mysterious humanoid forms helped revolutionize conceptual approaches to illustration in the late 20th century. While Folon has worked across multiple disciplines—including painting, textile, sculpture, stained glass, and printmaking—he is perhaps best known for his drawings and watercolors depicting landscapes in the vein of Surrealist masters such as Salvador Dalí and René Magritte. These works depicted idyllic forests and prison-like skyscrapers populated by butterfly or bird/human hybrids he called “Everymen.” Folon’s drawings were published in such publications as Esquire, The New Yorker, and Time, among others, and he illustrated a number of well-known books. Folon widely exhibited during his lifetime, including at institutions such as Les Arts Décoratifs, the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London, and the Musée Picasso.

Original 1980 Jean-Michel Folon "Larousse" Advertising Poster

By Jean-Michel Folon

Located in PARIS, FR

This poetic original advertising poster created around 1980 by celebrated Belgian artist Jean-Michel Folon was commissioned for the renowned French publishing house Larousse, one of the world's most respected encyclopedic and educational publishers. Using his unmistakable visual language of floating figures, open skies and dreamlike landscapes, Folon transforms a commercial commission into an image of remarkable elegance and imagination. Against a radiant gradient of warm reds and oranges, a procession of airborne figures releases pages that descend gently toward an outstretched hand supporting a miniature city of books and knowledge. The metaphor is beautifully simple and profoundly effective: ideas travel through the air, knowledge circulates freely, and books become the foundation upon which civilization itself is built. The flying figures evoke both migration and transmission, while the scattered pages symbolize the movement of information across generations and cultures. Rather than illustrating dictionaries or encyclopedias directly, Folon chose to represent the very essence of publishing: the dissemination of ideas. The image perfectly captures Larousse's mission of making knowledge accessible and universal. The composition is characteristic of Folon's mature style. Large areas of luminous colour create a sense of calm and contemplation, while the minimal elements are arranged with extraordinary precision. The vast empty space surrounding the central motif gives the image a poetic silence rarely encountered in advertising art. By the 1980s, Jean-Michel Folon had become one of the most internationally recognized poster artists of his generation. His work appeared on book covers, magazine illustrations, postage stamps, public campaigns and cultural institutions around the world. Yet his commercial commissions always retained the same humanistic and philosophical qualities that define his fine art. The partnership between Folon and Larousse was particularly fitting. Both shared a belief in culture as a means of openness and exchange, and both sought to make knowledge and creativity available to the widest possible audience. The restrained typography placed discreetly in the upper corner allows the imagery to speak for itself. This balance between visual poetry and graphic clarity reflects Folon's extraordinary understanding of poster design as both communication and art. Original Folon posters...
