Bracket clock with moon dial and mahogany wood case. Amsterdam, 18th c.

Located in Madrid, ES

Bracket clock with moon dial and mahogany wood case. Amsterdam, 18th century. Johannes Pieter Kroese (1702-1778). Chimes of half past the hour, alarm and music. Machinery in proper working order. The clock case has a rectangular base and is decorated at the corners with gilt bronze appliqués featuring vegetal motifs topped with grotesques of female busts. Pinecones and a pearl adorn the upper portion, which is raised towards the center and has softened lines. The dial, protected by a front door, displays Roman numerals, with lines and Arabic numerals every five minutes. It has a rectangular opening for the day and is surrounded by vegetal motifs reminiscent of rocaille. In the two corners are a dial for the alarm and another for various chimes. At the top, a half-sphere, surrounded by a metal band engraved with the signature, displays the phases of the moon using a starry sky disc with a human face painted on it. The pendulum-type machinery has been engraved on the outside with plant motifs, as can be seen on the back of the box, which also has a small door with a glass sheet. The style is typical of 17th century Northern European clocks, developed primarily in England and used to highlight the quality of the clock's movement, in contrast to French examples, which focused more on the aesthetic appearance of the exterior. Thus, the case is much simpler than in France, but the mechanism was far more precise, and the technical intricacies found in examples like this (music box, calendar, chimes, alarm, etc.) were more common than in French clocks. Johannes Pieter Kroese was a master clockmaker from Wuppertal (Kruse) who worked in Amsterdam from around 1729 in his workshop, where his son, Pieter Kroese, also worked, succeeding him in 1775. He was especially renowned for his astrological clocks...

Late 19th Century Large French Japy Frères Gilt Bronze Mantel Clock, 19.7 in

Late 19th Century Large French Japy Frères Gilt Bronze Mantel Clock, 19.7 in

By Japy Frères

Located in SANT ADRIÀ DE BESÒS, ES

A substantial and highly decorative French mantel clock dating to the late 19th century, circa 1890, fitted with a mechanical movement by the renowned French maker Japy Frères. The imposing architectural case is richly modelled in the Baroque Revival taste, with elaborate scrolling foliage, floral ornament, pierced decorative sections and an impressive classical female mask forming the upper crest. The lower section is centred by a heraldic shield surrounded by elaborate scrolling ornament. The case is made from a gilt copper-alloy metal, most likely bronze or brass. The original gilded surface has considerably mellowed with age, leaving a warm darker bronze-gold tone and attractive natural patina throughout. The exact alloy has not been analytically tested. The circular dial combines a decorative metal centre with Roman numeral hour markers and retains its antique character. Both the original front glass and the glazed rear door are present. The French two-train movement bears the Japy Frères medallion. Japy Frères was one of the most important French manufacturers of clock movements during the 19th century. The clock was tested and is currently running. The original pendulum is included; no winding key is supplied. Details: Dimensions: Height 50 cm (19.7 in.); Width 28 cm (11.0 in.); Depth 14 cm (5.5 in.) Weight - 7.5kg Condition: Very good antique condition overall. The case shows natural age-related patina, oxidation and considerable wear/loss to the original gilded surface, giving the metal its present darker bronze-gold appearance. No significant structural damage to the case has been observed. Original front and rear glass are preserved. The clock was tested and is running at the time of listing. Original pendulum included; winding key not included. As with any antique mechanical clock...

19th Century, Hunter Mantel Clock with Rococo Decoration, Vincenti & Cie, 16.5″

By Vincenti et Cie

Located in SANT ADRIÀ DE BESÒS, ES

A striking sculptural mantel clock depicting a hunter sounding his horn, with a long gun in his other hand and a dark-finished deer at his feet. Oak foliage, acorns and a rocky landscape frame the scene above an elaborate Rococo-style case. The figure rewards close inspection: textured clothing, decorative cuffs, buckled straps and carefully defined facial features contrast with the smoother surfaces of the tall boots. A small hunting accessory hangs freely from a twisted-wire suspension, adding a distinctive dimensional detail to the composition. The modelling extends throughout the surrounding foliage and the textured surface of the animal. The richly ornamented case combines scrolling supports, pierced decoration, floral sprays and shell motifs. Two pale inset panels with applied gilt ornaments flank the white enamel dial, which features black Roman numerals, a minute track and open-circle hands. The gilding retains an attractive warm colour and gives the clock a strong decorative presence. The movement bears two stamps: “Vincenti & Cie - Médaille d’Argent” and “Fabrique Edward Barrard & Cie de Paris.” These inscriptions identify the names marked on the movement; the maker of the decorative case remains unconfirmed. The accompanying original winding key is included. Dimensions: Height 42 cm × width 34 cm × depth 13 cm (16.54 × 13.39 × 5.12 inches). Weight: 5.6 kg (12.35 lb) Condition: Good overall antique condition, with well-preserved gilding and light surface wear consistent with age. Localised enamel loss is present around the left winding aperture. Fine lines resembling cracks are visible in the decorative surround beneath the left inset panel. The rear movement opening is uncovered, as shown in the photographs. The movement was tested for 24 hours, during which the clock ran steadily and the striking mechanism operated correctly. This records its performance during the test period and does not constitute a guarantee of future operation or timekeeping accuracy. As with antique mechanical clocks...

19th Century Rare Griffin Garniture de Cheminée with Five-Light Candelabra, 20in

19th Century Rare Griffin Garniture de Cheminée with Five-Light Candelabra, 20in

Located in SANT ADRIÀ DE BESÒS, ES

A highly unusual and richly conceived three-piece clock garniture, probably French and dating from the late 19th century, comprising a substantial mantel clock and a pair of matching five-light candelabra. The ensemble is distinguished by an exceptionally coherent decorative program centered on griffins and fantastical chimerical creatures. Sculptural griffin forms flank the body of the clock, further griffin heads appear beneath the lateral platforms, while a prominent fantastical mask forms the central element of the lower case. The same imagery is repeated throughout the hand-decorated porcelain panels, creating a remarkable visual relationship between the sculptural mounts and the ceramic decoration. The clock is surmounted by a large polychrome porcelain vessel held within an elaborate gilt-metal mount and decorated in a vivid palette of deep raspberry, turquoise, violet, red and gold. Similar colors and fantastical creatures appear throughout the numerous inset porcelain plaques and on the central dial. Individual black Roman-numeral cartouches surround the dial, contributing to the highly architectural character of the composition. The pair of tall matching candelabra continue the same elaborate decorative vocabulary, with five-light arrangements, scrolling branches, architectural finials, polychrome porcelain elements and griffin-form supports. Stylistically, the garniture belongs to the eclectic Historicist vocabulary of the later 19th century, combining Neo-Gothic and Renaissance Revival elements with a more exotic Orientalist or Japonisant sensibility. The pronounced use of fantastical animals, vivid color and elaborate architectural metalwork distinguishes the ensemble considerably from more conventional porcelain-mounted French clock garnitures of the period. Of particular interest, inspection of the porcelain components revealed at least three concealed handwritten inscriptions apparently reading “Gallé” on reverse or interior surfaces. These inscriptions are hidden once the components are assembled and appear to have served a workshop or production-related purpose. The inscriptions are recorded exactly as observed. No definitive documentary attribution to Émile Gallé or the Maison Gallé has presently been established, and any such attribution remains preliminary. Their repetition on several separate porcelain components is nevertheless noteworthy and merits further research. The garniture is exceptionally substantial in construction. The clock alone weighs approximately 10 kg, while each candelabrum weighs approximately 4 kg. The mechanical movement was tested continuously for approximately 24 hours prior to listing. During this test, the clock remained in operation and the striking mechanism functioned correctly. The movement was therefore found to be in good working order at the time of testing. As with any antique mechanical clock...

Located in SANT ADRIÀ DE BESÒS, ES

An exceptionally elaborate French three-piece mantel clock garniture dating to the second half of the 19th century, circa 1870, comprising a monumental mantel clock and its original pair of five-light candelabra. Richly conceived in the historicist taste of the Napoleon III period, the ensemble is distinguished by an extraordinary density of sculptural and architectural ornament. The clock is constructed as an elaborate architectural composition, its circular white enamel dial framed by a finely ornamented gilt surround and flanked by tall, fluted classical columns. Particularly striking is the large central decorative panel beneath the dial. It is modelled in high relief with a classical female mask emerging from an elaborate symmetrical arrangement of scrolling acanthus foliage, flowers and arabesques. The ornament continues throughout the case, with floral garlands, foliate scrolls, palmettes, beading, moulded borders and richly worked architectural details creating an exceptionally opulent surface. The upper section is crowned by a substantial classical urn with a domed cover and finial. Its fluted and lobed body is surrounded by sweeping foliate handles terminating in flame-like elements, giving the clock a particularly imposing vertical silhouette. On either side of the clock, scrolling architectural extensions are surmounted by smaller ornamental urns and richly modelled foliage. The lower section incorporates further floral panels, classical motifs and boldly scrolling feet, producing an unusually complex and balanced composition when viewed from the front. The white enamel dial displays blue Roman numerals for the hours and an outer Arabic minute track, complemented by an elaborate pair of pierced gilt hands. Two winding apertures indicate the time-and-strike movement. The movement bears the Japy Frères mark, one of the most important names associated with French clockmaking of the 19th century. The accompanying candelabra were conceived as an integral part of the garniture and repeat the ornamental vocabulary of the clock. Each rises from an architectural base richly decorated with floral reliefs, scrollwork and foliate feet. Above is a large classical urn-form body with fluting and applied ornament, from which emerge five candle branches. The branches form an elegant symmetrical arrangement of tightly coiled volutes and acanthus foliage. The central candleholder is elevated above the four surrounding lights, creating the characteristic tiered silhouette of an important French mantel garniture. The candle cups themselves are finely modelled with fluted classical decoration. The ensemble retains its gilt surface, whose warm tone beautifully emphasizes the remarkable depth and variety of the cast decoration. The clock is accompanied by its shaped wooden display base, finished to complement the architecture of the case. The original pendulum and two keys are also present. With the clock measuring approximately 47 cm (18.5 in.) high on its base and each candelabrum approximately 46 cm (18.1 in.) high, the complete garniture has considerable presence. The substantial weight — approximately 8 kg for the clock alone and approximately 3.5 kg for each candelabrum — further reflects the substantial construction of the ensemble. A highly decorative and imposing example of French 19th-century horological and decorative arts, conceived as a unified mantelpiece composition and particularly impressive for its elaborate sculptural ornament, substantial proportions and survival as a complete three-piece ensemble. Dimensions: Clock without wooden base: 38 cm wide × 43 cm high / 15.0 × 16.9 in. Clock with wooden base: 42 cm wide × 47 cm high / 16.5 × 18.5 in. Each candelabrum: 17 cm wide × 46 cm high / 6.7 × 18.1 in. Approximate weight of clock without base: 8 kg / 17.6 lb Approximate weight of each candelabrum: 3.5 kg / 7.7 lb Condition: The garniture is preserved in very good antique condition, with age-related wear consistent with its 19th-century date. The gilt surfaces remain remarkably well preserved overall, retaining a rich and visually impressive appearance. The enamel dial shows a small area of historic restoration around the Roman numeral IV, where part of the numeral and the adjacent enamel have been carefully restored. Minor surface traces consistent with age are also visible. The original convex front glass is no longer present. The rear glazed door and its glass remain in place. The clock has been wound and tested through one complete winding cycle and operated correctly during testing, including the striking mechanism. As with any antique mechanical clock...
