About the Item

"Witness (Dessert Pronghorn)" by Heidi Moller Somsen, ceramic, 14 1/2 X 20 in., $2,000. The desert pronghorn are fascinating creatures, and the only large, plant-eating mammal species in America to survive the Ice Age. They have remained largely unchanged from an evolutionary standpoint for over 30,000 years. They have large eyes (the same sized eyes as an elephant) and 320 degrees of vision. Inspired and influenced by the essay, "The Council of Pronghorn" by Terry Tempest Williams, Somsen presents us with this sculpture of a remarkable creature that as a species survived catastrophic extinction events, now serving as silent witnesses to the antics of humankind, as they waver on the brink of extinction. "With these works I am speaking about our relationship with the natural world and our responsibility to the environment. I use the fragmented human figure – a bust, feet, an arm, combined with mountain forms to suggest and evoke a sense of sacrifice and the idea of “grounding” or literal connection to the earth – bare feet, touching dirt and rock, planting one’s self in the soil as a way of healing. As humans we have been on the earth a relatively short time, yet we have done significant damage. I believe there is a relationship between how we treat the earth and how we treat each other. Our physical bodies age and erode, our country is aging and eroding, and the effects are not easily reversed, but there are benefits to aging as well – wisdom, growth, spirituality. - Heidi Moller Somsen

"Wendover 2" by Joseph Ostraff, oil on panel, 36 X 31 inches, $4,800. "For me, paint documents the state of things, how I feel and what is at the forefront in my thinking—maybe it’s like the soup of the day. I do not consider this process to be anything special in itself. The paintings record the daily random and absurd associations I make, which seem interesting to me after the fact. The Domestic paintings are a case in point. My wife and I have six children. Four have left home. Three are married. We are left with two children, both currently in middle school. We have about five years and they too will move out. This is on my mind. I am thinking about the layers of memories and it comes out as layers of paint. Feeling nostalgic, I think about all the noise and activity our home has absorbed. In turn, I found children’s large vinyl decals from Angry Birds...

San Rafael Reef #2, acrylic on panel, 11 x 37 1/2 inches, $2,200 “It is my feeling that the desert country of the American West is too large, too wild, too gorgeous to be encompassed by traditional landscape painting. Our inherited aesthetic defines beauty in landscape as green and arable land or grand, breathtaking places. I feel the need to expand that definition. I want to portray the desert as it is right now; to dispense with the limitations of what has come before, to quietly point out the beauty of places that are harsh and forbidding to habitation but express an aesthetic of the wild. I strive to go beyond the sentimentality that often defines our images of the West. The scale of many of my pieces (an extreme horizontal) is a compositional strategy to capture the vastness of these places.” – M. Knudsen Mark Knudsen...
