About the Item

'Ranunculus' English botanical engraving with original hand-colouring. 1818 From Thomas Green's 'Universal Herbal, or Botanical, Medical, and Agricultural Dictionary', a comprehensive early 19th-century reference book written by Thomas Green and published 1820–1824. It was designed to give gardeners, farmers, and botanists a complete guide to known global plants. and was arranged according to the Linnaean plant classification system. This original hand-coloured engraving depicts multiple varieties of Ranunculus flowers, showing blooms in shades of purple, yellow, and red at various stages of opening. The composition includes detailed foliage, a seed head at lower left, and an exposed root system at lower right. The plate illustrates what florists term semi-double varieties, from whose seeds the most valuable varieties are produced. The engraving is a fine example of early nineteenth-century botanical illustration. 27cm by 20.5cm (sheet size).
