Circa 1950 Original Poster by Albert Solon Les Vignobles de France

Circa 1950 Original Poster by Albert Solon Les Vignobles de France

By Albert Solon 1

Located in PARIS, FR

Created circa 1950 by French commercial artist Albert Solon, this original poster printed in lithograph celebrates the vineyards and wine-producing regions of France. It was issued under the authority of the French Ministry of Agriculture and the Comité National de Propagande en Faveur du Vin, an organization responsible for promoting French wine. Solon presents the country as an unfurled parchment map, with its principal vineyards marked by clusters of green vine leaves. Champagne, Alsace, Burgundy, the Loire Valley, Cognac, Bordeaux, Armagnac, Languedoc, the Rhône Valley and Provence are among the regions prominently identified, accompanied by the names of celebrated appellations and wine-producing towns. A second section of the map includes Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia, reflecting their place within France’s colonial sphere at the time the poster was produced. A French tricolour ribbon and a red wax seal decorated with a wine glass complete the composition, lending the image the appearance of an official national document. The restrained palette of cream, pale blue, green, burgundy and black gives the poster a sophisticated decorative character. Its combination of cartography, typography and stylized illustration transforms an informative wine map into a particularly striking example of post-war French graphic design. Albert Solon was a French poster artist active throughout the middle decades of the twentieth century, producing advertising and travel designs for several prominent commercial clients. With its attractive geographical composition and rich cultural subject, this original poster will appeal to collectors of French wine memorabilia...
