About the Item

Size with frame 29.5 x 25 inches Signed and dated upper left. Dumoulin’s work is astonishing, punctuated by nudes whose models seem to have been plucked from the glow of a red lantern. The lustful brushstrokes caressing the canvas suggest that the painter lives vicariously. From his studio, the painter falls in love with other models, such as a Creole woman or our African warrior. Had he encountered the latter during a visit to the colonial exhibition (1930), or seen him in a newspaper article? Dumoulin’s psychology recalls that of his contemporary Pierre Mac Orlan, in which the passive adventurer alone is capable of savoring the essence of travel. Not in writing, but in the painting that drives Dumoulin, women and other “exotic” figures are idealized; our African warrior embodies a model of virility—he is an archetype, reimagined and fantasized.
