Sunset at Öresund, 19th Century Oil on Canvas, Original Gilt Frame

Located in Stockholm, Stockholm

Sunset at Öresund with Kronborg Castle, late 19th century Danish school, oil on canvas. Original gilt wood frame. The present small format painting depicts Öresund at dusk, viewed from the Danish coast, with Kronborg Castle visible across the water in the middle distance. The castle is shown in a subdued atmospheric light, its towers and buildings softly defined against the pale evening sky. Several sailing boats are visible on the Sound, while in the foreground a small wooden boat has been hauled up onto the sandy shore. Rocks, posts and traces of seaweed provide additional detail along the water's edge. The work, most likely from the end of the 19th century, is executed on an unusually small canvas for a finished coastal view of this type. The intimate format, measuring only 18 × 14 cm, suggests that it may have been painted as a small personal memento, study, or gift, rather than as a formal exhibition work. The restrained palette of pale blue, ochre, grey and warm yellow is particularly effective in conveying the evening light. The distant architecture is handled with a light and economical touch, while the foreground boat and shoreline are painted with more defined brushwork. Despite its modest dimensions, the artist has created a convincing sense of recession from the beach across the water towards Kronborg. Kronborg and the surrounding coastline of northern Zealand were important subjects for Danish artists throughout the 19th century. The area around Helsingør, Kronborg and Øresund attracted painters from the Danish Golden Age onwards, while the coast and fishing communities continued to provide subjects for later 19th-century artists. Marine painting was an established speciality within Danish art, with artists such as Carl Dahl, Carl Frederik Sørensen...

Scottish Iona Island, Seas, shore, sails and coastline, 19th Century

By Duncan Cameron

Located in Hillsborough, NC

Fine painting of iconic Iona Island coast by celebrated Scottish artist Duncan Cameron (1837-1916). Renowned for his landscape paintings, this work captures the natural light on the sea, sand and rocks with splashes of rich color under a big sky. Iona off the west coast of Scotland, has attracted artists for for its dramatic scenery and northern light, including the Scottish Colourists who favored the fresh pure light. The cliffs and coastal rocks are reminiscent of works by Samuel Peploe, John MacLauchlan Milne, Francis Cadell, and Duncan Fergusson of this fabled island. In 1876 Cameron won a Gold Medal for landscape painting, at the Crystal Palace exhibition. The year after this painting (circa 1870s) Cameron began exhibiting in the Royal Academy, Society of British Artists, and Royal Scottish Academy, showing his work consistently from 1880. Other venues for exhibiting his work include the Glasgow Institute, Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, Manchester City Art Gallery, and the Royal Hibernian Academy. His work is sold today in Fine Art Galleries in the UK and in Saltire Gallerie, USA. His landscape paintings are widely acclaimed, and this landscape painting of considerable size and detail is a fine example. Born in Perthshire, Cameron studied in Dundee and in South Kensington, London. He later died in Edinburgh. The highest auction sale of his work reached nearly 20,000 GBP. He was widely acclaimed as a landscape artist, painting Scottish farmlands and haystacks, coastal scenes and lochs. In this work the colors of the sea change from blue to green with white crests of waves. The rocks have splashes of red, rust and orange, and the beach has red and green in the sand. Water laps at the edge of beach and rock. A sailboat is a focal point, with distant sailboats on the water, and a rowboat by the central sailboat. A hill rises behind the beach painted...

A superb coastal landscape by C. Follini, signed, depicting fishermen and fisherwomen gathered along a windswept shoreline at low tide. Executed in oil on canvas and signed in the lower right corner, the painting is a remarkable example of late nineteenth- or early twentieth-century European marine painting, distinguished by its atmospheric light and expansive sense of space. The composition unfolds across a broad sandy beach where small groups of figures are engaged in the daily activities of a fishing community. Several boats rest on the shore while waves break gently along the coastline. Above, an immense sky filled with dramatic clouds dominates the scene, becoming the true protagonist of the composition. Through subtle tonal transitions and luminous passages of light, the artist masterfully captures the ever-changing atmosphere of the sea. Particularly striking is the treatment of the sky, which occupies a substantial portion of the canvas and lends the work a profound sense of openness and grandeur. Soft grays, silvery blues, warm creams, and muted ochres are orchestrated with remarkable sensitivity, creating a rich atmospheric effect reminiscent of the great traditions of Dutch, Belgian, and French marine painting. Rather than focusing on anecdotal detail, Follini emphasizes mood, weather, and the relationship between human activity and the natural environment. The small scale of the figures compared to the vast beach and sky reinforces the poetic dimension of the work, evoking both the beauty and the power of the coastal landscape. The artist's confident handling of paint is evident throughout the composition. Broad brushstrokes and subtle impasto passages animate the clouds, sea, and sand, while preserving a remarkable sense of unity. The restrained palette contributes to the painting's elegance and timeless appeal, making it both an important marine subject and a highly decorative work. Combining genre painting, maritime life, and atmospheric landscape, this composition embodies the enduring appeal of European coastal art. It would make a distinguished addition to a collection of marine paintings, maritime subjects, or nineteenth- and early twentieth-century European landscapes. A poetic and beautifully executed seascape celebrating the rhythms of coastal life beneath a magnificent sky. C. Fisherman with Nets at Villeneuve, Lake Geneva – Swiss School, Late 19th Century

Located in Genève, GE

Fisherman with Nets at Villeneuve, Lake Geneva – Swiss School, Late 19th Century This atmospheric oil painting depicts a fisherman standing on the quiet shore of an Alpine lake, surrounded by large fishing nets stretched along the water’s edge. Beyond him, the lake opens onto an expansive mountain landscape, its distant peaks emerging through a delicate veil of bluish haze. A solitary sailing boat glides across the still water, while a small house with a red roof and a line of slender trees punctuate the distant shoreline. The composition is beautifully balanced between the more detailed foreground, animated by the figure of the fisherman and the intricate pattern of the nets, and the broad, luminous expanse of water and sky beyond. The nets themselves form a particularly decorative element, their fine, almost transparent mesh catching the light and creating a subtle rhythm across the lower part of the painting. Executed in a restrained palette of silvery blues, soft greys, muted greens and warm ivory tones, the work is distinguished by its remarkable sense of calm and atmosphere. The mountains are rendered with softened contours rather than precise topographical detail, allowing them to dissolve gradually into the surrounding light. Their cool tonalities are echoed in the reflections upon the lake, creating a harmonious continuity between water, landscape and sky. The artist appears particularly attentive to the changing effects of natural light. The pale, diffused illumination suggests the quiet hours of early morning or perhaps the end of the day, when the lake becomes almost perfectly still and distant forms lose their sharpness. This sensitive observation of atmosphere, combined with the realistic depiction of everyday fishing life, places the work within the tradition of European Naturalist and plein-air landscape painting of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Both intimate and expansive, the painting offers a poetic evocation of traditional life on an Alpine lake. The solitary fisherman, monumental mountain backdrop and almost motionless water give the scene a contemplative character, while the subtle treatment of light lends the composition an understated elegance particularly characteristic of landscape painting around the turn of the century. Alpine lake painting, fisherman painting...

Nordic Winter Landscape, Oil on Canvas, Signed, Early 20th Century

Located in Stockholm, Stockholm

Nordic winter landscape with low growing pines and spruces rising from softly undulating snow covered ground and rocks. In the distance, dark forests and snow clad mountains emerge along the horizon beneath a pale blue sky. Executed with expressive brushwork and a restrained yet luminous palette, the painting captures the stillness and clarity of the Scandinavian winter. Oil on canvas mounted on board, signed John Öhwall. John Öhwall (1883–1957) was a Swedish painter best known for his realistic and atmospheric depictions of the Nordic landscape, particularly scenes from Bohuslän and Skåne. His art is characterized by vigorous brushwork, restrained yet expressive coloration, and a strong sensitivity to seasonal light and the quiet monumentality of the Scandinavian countryside. Öhwall was born in Skåne, and initially trained as a decorative painter before turning to fine art. In 1903 he began his artistic studies under the influential Swedish painter Carl Wilhelmson in Gothenburg, whose teaching had a lasting impact on his artistic development. Between 1908 and 1914, Öhwall undertook extensive walking journeys through Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, and Italy while pursuing independent artistic studies. During this period he also studied for an extended time at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden and at Chrakovsky’s painting school in Rome. During the war years, from 1914 to 1917, he periodically continued his studies at Wilhelmson’s painting school in Stockholm. In the early 1920s he permanently settled on the Swedish west coast, a region that would provide inspiration for many of his most important landscape paintings. Öhwall made his debut as an exhibitor at Gummesons Konsthall during the 1910s, followed by solo exhibitions in Gothenburg, Oslo, and Norrköping. Together with Tor Otto Fredlin...

Loch Awe and Kilchurn Castle Scotland, 19th Century, Mountain and Loch Landscape

Located in Hillsborough, NC

Loch Awe and Kilchurn Castle is a landscape oil painting on board by 19th century artist Edward Train (1801 -1866). Train was a British artist, painting mostly landscapes in northern England and, like this one, in Scotland. The painting is signed E. Train (lower left) and dated 1850 or 1856, the last number being too faint to be certain. From 1850 to 1880 Train flourished as an artist. His work was exhibited from the 1830s. Born in Gateshead, Tyneside, Train left to take an apprenticeship with a London engraver. In the 1830s Train traveled with an expedition to the Hebrides and Shetland Islands. Here he became fascinated with the Scottish scenery that would become part of his repertoire of landscape art. Loch Awe lies in the west of Scotland in Argyll and Bute. Kilchurn Castle, built in the 16th century, lies on a peninsula inside the Loch, on the water's edge. Train would have traveled to the Highlands and painted the dramatic scene from the east banks of Loch Awe, across from the Castle. This painting captures the Highland mountains, loch and castle that was very much the ouevre of this artist's work. Train painted the Highlands decades before other renowned landscape artists of the 19th century, such as Alfred de Breanski, Louis Bosworth Hurt, Douglas and Duncan Cameron...
