About the Item

A student of William Merritt Chase and a resident of the famed Tenth Street Studio Building, Irving Ramsay Wiles became one of America's foremost portrait and figure painters. Strongly influenced by French Impressionism, Wiles frequently chose his wife and other women as models, depicting them in fashionable, elaborate attire, including veils, kimonos, negligees, capes, elegant dresses, and fur coats. Gladys portrays Wiles's daughter, Gladys Lee Wiles, who would later follow in her father's footsteps, becoming an Associate National Academician and an accomplished painter in her own right. Irving Ramsay Wiles’s works can be found in esteemed collections across the country, including the National Gallery of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the New-York Historical Society, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Description During her expatriate career, between the mid-1880s and return to the United States in 1920, painter and muralist Mary Fairchild MacMonnies (later Low) was one of the most successful American women artists of her generation. Mary Fairchild was born in Connecticut, but was raised largely in St. Louis, Missouri. Inspired by her mother's work as a painter of miniatures and dissatisfied as a school teacher, she enrolled in the St. Louis School of Fine Arts, where she led a movement for women to be permitted to draw model posed in the nude, an important component of artistic training then considered improper for well-bred young women.
