Gaspar Riera Moragues
Gaspar Riera Moragues (1922–1993) was a Spanish painter born in Estellencs, Mallorca, whose work was closely associated with the island's landscape. Largely self-taught, he built a career centred on painting the Mediterranean countryside, developing a distinctive style marked by simplified forms, balanced compositions, and a strong sense of light. Pine trees, the Serra de Tramuntana, cultivated fields, and coastal views became recurring subjects throughout his career. Riera began exhibiting in Mallorca during the 1960s and went on to show his work regularly in galleries and cultural institutions in both Mallorca and Barcelona. Over the years, his paintings evolved from more traditional landscapes to increasingly personal compositions, always rooted in careful observation of the island's scenery. Alongside painting, he also worked in drawing, watercolour, printmaking, photography, and writing, reflecting a broad and independent artistic practice. Today, Gaspar Riera is regarded as one of the best-known Mallorcan landscape painters of the second half of the twentieth century. His work is represented in numerous private collections and continues to be appreciated for its distinctive use of colour, quiet compositions, and enduring celebration of the Mediterranean landscape.
