“By Night” by Daniel Castan is a sensuous exploration of light, reflection, and the atmospheric energy of the city after dark. Measuring 100 x 100 cm, the composition dissolves urban architecture into a shimmering field of colour, where suggestions of buildings and illuminated streets give way to fluid reflections across the surface below. Rather than presenting the city directly, Castan transforms it into an immersive impression shaped by movement, memory, and light.
Castan’s abstract approach gives the scene a rich and expressive presence. Architectural forms remain partially recognisable towards the upper section of the composition, while the reflections below become increasingly gestural and spontaneous. Broad passages of paint, softened edges, and layered marks allow the city to shift between structure and abstraction, creating an image that feels both grounded and dreamlike.
The vertical movement of the reflections introduces a strong rhythm throughout the composition. Elongated bands of colour appear to stretch downwards into the dark surface, creating the impression of lights being pulled and distorted by moving water. These flowing forms contrast with the more stable architectural shapes above, establishing a dynamic tension between solidity and fluidity.
Colour is central to the painting’s visual impact. Deep carmine, rich reds, warm golds, and darker tonal passages intermingle across the surface, creating a palette that feels dramatic, intimate, and atmospheric. Brighter areas of yellow and gold suggest illuminated windows, streetlights, and headlights, while the surrounding darkness intensifies their glow and gives the composition a distinctly nocturnal quality.
The painting’s abstract surface also encourages a heightened awareness of texture and mark-making. Layered brushstrokes, softened transitions, and gestural reflections create a sense of depth without relying on precise representation. The paint appears to shift between dense, saturated areas and more luminous passages, reinforcing the sensation of city light flickering across a restless surface.
Yet “By Night” is more than a study of urban reflections. By allowing the city to dissolve into colour and gesture, Castan moves beyond literal description and towards something more emotional. The scene becomes less about a specific place and more about the sensation of experiencing a city at night, where light, movement, and memory blur together into a single atmospheric impression.
With its sophisticated interplay of structure and abstraction, richly saturated palette, and expressive treatment of light and reflection, “By Night” transforms the nocturnal city into a compelling contemporary painting. This original 100 x 100 cm work is filled with warmth, mystery, and movement, bringing depth, drama, and a distinctly romantic urban atmosphere to any collection.

Artist Biography:
Born in 1959 in Dordogne, Daniel Castan draws from a very young age. He graduated from the School of Fine Arts of Bordeaux. When he was 40 years old, he started painting again just for the pure pleasure of it. At age 48, he left everything to follow his dreams. At the beggining of his professional life Daniel Castan travelled a lot to New York and Hong Kong. He had a special fascination for the urban world and their exaggerated perspectives. In his paintings, he tries to recreate these graphic environments. The lines of the buildings get lost in the sky, the long avenues seem endless, the colors collide. The artist works direclty from his memories and imagination. Daniel Castan chose to paint with alkyd oil. This kind of oil works just like classical oil, but the binder in it, is a kind of resin that allows accelerated drying. His favorite tool is the knife, it allows him to work with paste, and to draw in different materials.
