San Francisco celebrates food trucks, and nowhere more than SPARK Social in Mission Bay. A British double-decker bus with giant lit-up letters draws attention in the urban park. The scene serves as the perfect challenge for a painter who focuses on light, nighttime, food, festivities, and the city's uniqueness.
About the Artist
Artist Hadley Northrop draws inspiration from her San Francisco surroundings, particularly the city at night. Her glowing depictions of light sources evoke the hazy beauty of a late-night stroll or an out-of-focus photograph. “With blurry little reference images, rich colors, and a velvety texture, my oil paintings have a warm, inviting atmosphere—whether capturing convivial bar scenes or a lone caravan glowing in the night,†says Hadley. Her love for art began with her mother, a watercolorist, and she pursued it through college and beyond. After graduating from UCLA, she was uncertain about continuing her artistic path. Seeking a change, she moved to England on an artist’s visa and joined a group studio above a mechanic’s garage in Leeds. The cold made live modeling impractical, leading her to work from photographs—an approach that remains central to her practice today. Now based in San Francisco’s Mission District, she paints daily in her small studio, accompanied by her Boston terrier puppy. In addition to painting, Hadley is an avid sewer and takes fashion classes.
