About the Item

Medium: Oil on Board Signature: Signed Lower Right Sight Size 30.00" x 27.00", Framed 38.00" x 35.00" Saturday Evening Post Cover, May 16, 1931 From the Estate of Charles Martignette. The work of Henry James Soulen is richly colored and strongly patterned. Each of his pictures is treated in a manner appropriate to the lack of pictorial depth of mural painting, and equally, to a magazine cover. He was given a Peabody Award for his magazine cover designs. Soulen was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He attended the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and later studied with Howard Pyle. For many years, his work appeared regularly in most of the quality magazines, and usually in color - even when the use of color was restricted - because of the brilliance of his pallet. During World War II, he gave free art lessons at the Valley Forge Military Hospital, a rehabilitation center for veterans.

Vintage Chinese Cigarette Advertisement Poster, c. 1930

Vintage Chinese Cigarette Advertisement Poster, c. 1930

Located in Chicago, IL

This poster from the 1930s draws from a well known Chinese opera scene. It melds the meticulous detail of traditional Chinese painting with the craft of color lithography. These advertisements, influenced by the Art Deco movement in the west, recall the economic boom of early 20th century Shanghai, an international center of business and trade. Layered with imagery of traditional Chinese life, the poster is nonetheless an advertisement for the modern cigarette industry, with several tobacco brands displayed in the top left corner, including Lan Ting, Hong Chun, and Jade Rabbit...
