About the Item

The world does not always come at you loudly. Sometimes it is quiet and persistent — a thousand small moments of pressure, expectation, judgment. A look that says you are too much. A silence that says you are not enough. An environment that wears you down not through one great blow, but through the relentless, daily accumulation of just be normal. just fit in. just stop. And somehow — you have to find a way to still be standing at the end of it. "The Silent Sanctuary" is about that standing. Two women face outward together — and they are the same woman, at different hours of the same survival. Their gaze is steady, direct, unafraid. Not defiant exactly. Something quieter and more powerful than defiance: endurance with dignity. They have been through the noise. They are still here. Their crimson gloves hang loose at their sides — not raised to fight, not folded in surrender. Simply present. Simply alive. Behind them, gold breathes through the darkness of deep forest green — the kind of light that exists in places the world forgot to poison. It is the light of something internal, something no toxic environment ever quite reached, no matter how hard it tried. And around them the spray paint swirls in every color of every voice that ever told them who to be — urgent, overlapping, eventually meaningless — while the two figures remain, rooted and unshaken, like trees that have learned to grow around the storm rather than wait for it to pass. Because sometimes sanctuary is not a place you find. It is a decision you make — inside yourself, quietly, without announcement — to refuse to be destroyed by what surrounds you. To keep standing. To keep looking forward. To know, with absolute certainty, that whatever comes next — you will still be here. Born in Lima, Peru, Victor-Raul Garcia was raised by his maternal grandmother with whom he immigrated to the United States at age 6. An abstract painter and collage artist, he has lived and worked in Europe and the US, and currently maintains his studio in Sullivan County, NY. His auto-didactic work is the result of a relentless passion to make his own reality, an innate resourcefulness and curiosity, endless days of continued experimentation, and an all-encompassing necessity to communicate through art. His art has been described as a subtle romance between expressionism and street art. By intertwining tactile and non-tactile elements through multi-layering techniques, he mirrors the complexities of his personal story, the absurdities of past and present history, and the altered state...
