About the Item

Pre-Raphaelite inspired symbolic and richly-textured oil painting by William Stewart MacGeorge (1861-1931), (RSA) of a river by Douglas Castle, Scotland. Known for his dark and lantern-lit painting ‘Halloween’ and also his impressionistic scenes of children in beautiful woodlands and meadows. Here we see something very unusual. His darker side emerges by the light of the moon, that transforms into a skull, with strange apparitions that appear on the other side of the river. A medieval young woman observes the ghostly display, herself in danger of crossing the river. Beside her, a seeming satchel is perhaps a child with a hat. An elongated river rapid is like a boat, symbolizing the crossing, the journey from life to death. You see, the artist was born in Douglas Castle known for the Black Dinner in medieval times hundreds of years before his birth. But the story about the murders of two Douglas youths deemed to be too close to the young king remained well known folk lore. The Black Dinner featured a boar head in the center of the table, with festivities and entertainment. Across the river you might just make out a figure riding a boar, faces and strange shapes emerge from the wall and woodland, at first unnoticed. Pre-Raphaelites re-imagined the mythical Lady of Shallot by Tennyson, and her journey down the river to her death. Sometimes a child appears, a symbol of innocence and in this case the youths that were killed for being good friends with a young king. Layered in impasto, MacGeorge skillfully paints us a lady by a river in moonlight, and then as we gaze, we see the scene in a whole new way. I barely believed my eyes at first, but other gazers, art historians as well as casual observers saw the same things, and then more and more. What was intended and what do we imagine we see? Masterful illusions. MacGeorge also painted a lovely autumn sunlit day at this same location. But here, we see the artist that gives us beauty, but can also deliver Halloween. MacGeorge’s work is in Scottish national galleries, public collections and private collections. His delightful impressionistic paintings are highly sought, but this dramatic one deserves a special notice in his repertiore.
