About the Item

Daniel Argimón – Abstract Composition, 1991 – Oil and Collage on Canvas – 81 × 100 cm Oil and cardboard collage on canvas. Signed and dated 1991 on the reverse. Unframed: 81 × 100 cm (31.9 × 39.4 in.). Large mixed-media abstract work by Catalan artist Daniel Argimón (Barcelona, 1929–1996), combining oil painting with applied cardboard elements. The composition is dominated by intense shades of blue, contrasted with areas of black and touches of red. The incorporation of cardboard adds physical depth and texture to the painted surface, emphasizing the material qualities that became a defining element of Argimón’s artistic language. Argimón was a significant figure within Catalan Informalism. Beginning with an expressive approach to painting, his work increasingly focused on abstraction, experimentation with materials and the physical qualities of the pictorial surface. Collage and the incorporation of unconventional materials played an important role in this exploration. A painter and printmaker, Argimón began working in his grandfather’s printing workshop in the early 1950s. He later received grants from the French government and the Institute of International Education, furthering his printmaking studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and the Pratt Center in New York. Throughout his career he exhibited extensively in Spain and internationally, and his work entered numerous museum and institutional collections in Europe and the Americas. Provenance: Private collection. Condition: Good overall condition, with minor signs of age and use consistent with the materials and period.
