About the Item

This abstract mixed media landscape is by Otto Donald Rogers. An acclaimed Canadian artist, Otto Rogers spent decades exploring the interplay of dynamic form, colour and light. His early influences-the formal structures of Cubism as interpreted by masterful artists like Picasso are apparent in this striking piece. Rogers' own unique visual language is a rare combination of both geometric or architectural forms and atmospheric backgrounds. The palette here is bold-brilliant red-orange dominates the colour field against a rich dark blue and black ground. White and yellow accents, and an earthy green and slate gray edge suggest nature. Lyrical markings add dynamic interest and energy to the dramatic work. "(I ) aim to achieve "the studied atmosphere and mellow light, the (inner) and meditative pursuit,' that he found in the Old Masters and with the "youthful inventiveness and bold vigour of modern American art." Otto Rogers "One of the defining features of Roger's art is its focus on layout, on the exact placement of forms. His placement can seem unsettling, strangely angled, awkward, unbalanced, isolated even, yet eventually they resolve into a meditative and uplifting calm." Ken Carpenter, Art Critic, Canadian Art Otto Rogers (1935-2019) was born in Saskatchewan and acquired his MA in Fine Arts from the University of Wisconsin. He later taught art at the University of Saskatchewan for 30 years. Rogers' contribution to teaching and mentoring the next generation of artists cannot be overstated. His work is included in more than 30 public collections across Canada, including the Art Gallery of Ontario, the McMichael Canadian Collection, and the National Gallery of Canada. Roger's work is also in the Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona and the National Gallery of Iceland, as well as numerous private and corporate collections. Rogers also helped sustain the Emma Lake Workshops, which provided a meeting place for many of North America's most respected visual artists and critics, including Clement Greenberg, Barnett Newman, Jules Olitiski, Kenneth Noland, Jack Shadbolt, and Helen Frankenthaler. In 2007, a book of his work, Otto Donald Rogers, including a foreword by famed British sculptor Sir Anthony Caro was published.

The vibrant colours—burnt orange, turquoise, black-a touch of green and the dynamic form of this inspired composition is quintessentially Otto Rogers. The modernist artist was masterful in his use of acrylic paints and his work reflected the natural beauty that surrounded his country studio. Saskatchewan born Rogers (1935-2019) was recognized by the NY art critic, Clement Greenberg as a ‘big attack’ painter early in his career and stated that his artwork showed a ‘fullness of inspiration.’ A devout follower of the Baha’i faith, Rogers did not view art as simply a ‘decorative thing.’ “Nature is God...

Renee Gaylin Ritter (American, b. 1935) Growth, c. 1990s Mixed media on canvas 16 1/4 x 31 3/4 x 2 in. Signed lower right Bio from Renee Ritter's website: I'm a New Yorker, born and bred. I was raised with noise and rush and life all around me. My world was vivid technicolor, and no one ran faster than I did. I met and married the man of my dreams, and had the joys and exasperations of raising a family. And all of these events would have been the colors of my canvas if not for the happy opportunity of being able to spend some years in Japan. Japan is the perfect place to plunk down a New Yorker. While it races along on one level, there is this other part of Japan that forces you to hit the mental brakes until the images racing by slow down enough to actually be seen! Eastern thought is a well from which to draw the pure water that clears the mind and strengthens the soul. I've had the unbelievable pleasure of turning visions into realities, and of having those pieces of me scattered around the world. I'm thrilled that they've found so much acceptance in exhibitions, and I'm humbled at the thought that they hang on the walls of museums. But I have to say that I am most pleased when they speak so loudly to another soul that that person has to bring me home to continue our conversation for years to come. For the last 18 years, I've been a teacher, too. I have all the joys of being able to step back from what I do, and think through the principles I've recognized and the pathways I've wandered. And then to offer those insights to others to help them bring out their own mental images for the rest of us to share.
