About the Item

Holden Kepecs is a New York City based artist who has had a career spanning over 4 decades consisting of video editing and being a mixed media artist. With a lifelong connection to music, Kepecs turns his attention to the imagery and physical objects that have shaped how music is remembered. His practice, Re-disCovered Art, grew from the idea of rescuing discarded and forgotten album covers and transforming them into one-of-a-kind mixed-media works. Through this process, Kepecs gives these objects a second life, creating visual “time capsules” that preserve their connection to music and popular culture while placing them in an entirely new context. His practice draws from his career as a professional video editor, where he developed an understanding of composition, rhythm, sequencing, and narrative. Kepecs has received 5 Emmy Awards for his work on Nick News with Linda Ellerbee as well as Nightline . Much like the process of editing, his artwork brings together individual fragments to create new relationships and stories. Kepecs explores the album cover as both image and object. By cutting, layering, and reconstructing these materials, typography, photography, color, and cultural references overlap to form new compositions. Each piece is unique, requiring at least 120 albums to create. His works invite viewers to recognize familiar imagery while forming their own connections to the music, memories, and eras they represent. Through Re-disCovered Art, Kepecs continues to explore the intersection of music, nostalgia, and visual culture, preserving artifacts of the analog era while reimagining their possibilities as contemporary works of art.
