Created by La Motta in 1955, this original poster was commissioned for the 36th International Eucharistic Congress in Rio de Janeiro. Held from July 17 to 24, the congress was an important international Catholic gathering organized around the theme of Christ the Redeemer and his Eucharistic kingdom. The composition places Rio’s celebrated statue of Christ the Redeemer at the center of an expansive celestial vision. With his arms extended, Christ forms the upper section of a monumental cross rendered in the green and yellow colors associated with Brazil. Below, he stands upon a globe centered on South America, where a radiant star indicates the location of Rio de Janeiro. A deep blue background and surrounding constellation of stars give the poster a sense of spiritual grandeur.
