By Léon Levkovitch
Located in NANTES, FR
Created in 1988, this signed mixed-media work on paper by Léon Levkovitch presents a densely populated, imaginary world of stylised human figures, enigmatic faces and hybrid forms. Arranged across a shallow, almost architectural space, the figures evoke an ancient civilisation, with their elongated bodies, hieratic postures and simplified facial features recalling the visual language of Etruscan art.
The composition is animated by a network of fine, expressive lines, delicate incisions and textured passages. A restrained palette of ivory, chalk white, pale sage green, dusty blue, ochre and muted pink gives the work an aged, archaeological appearance. Small accents of red, yellow and blue enliven the surface, while the irregular outlines and layered marks create a sense of visual depth without conventional perspective.
Levkovitch's fascination with Etruscan art informs the work's archaic sensibility, while its intuitive figuration and deliberately unconventional proportions lend it a distinctly personal character. Combining elements of drawing and painting, this expressive figurative artwork occupies an intriguing space between modern European art, primitive-inspired imagery and mythological evocation.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Léon Levkovitch (1936–2025) was a Polish-born painter and sculptor whose distinctive figurative language developed within the international artistic environment of post-war Paris. Born in Łódź, Poland, he graduated in 1960 from the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Łódź, where he studied under Zdzisław Głowacki. He moved to Paris in 1961 and continued his artistic training in lithography at the École des Beaux-Arts, completing his studies in 1970.
Levkovitch held his first solo exhibition at the Galerie Abel Rosenberg in Paris in 1969. His work encompassed painting, drawing, printmaking and sculpture, often combining different techniques to create richly textured surfaces and unusual figurative compositions. His artistic language drew on the expressive traditions associated with the École de Paris, while his sculptural practice reflected a fascination with Etruscan art, ancient mythology and archaic forms. From 1972, he regularly worked in Pietrasanta, Italy, where he produced bronze and terracotta sculptures.
His works entered collections including those of the museums of Haifa and Strasbourg, the City of Paris and the Bibliothèque nationale de France. Levkovitch's practice occupies an individual position between modern European figuration, expressionism and the enduring visual language of ancient civilizations.
